Lesson 06: Prophet Muhammad The World’s Best Teacher

Among the responsibilities of the Prophets, the most important responsibility is to reform the morals and attitudes of human beings. The Holy Prophet fulfilled this responsibility imposed by Allah Almighty in a well manner. He trained the  Companions in such a good way that they turned out to be the best among the humans in the society. The main point of the way of teaching of Prophet  is that whatever he  taught others, he used to implement it on his own life first and later other people made it a part of their lives. Wisdom and insight were two of the basic parts of the Prophets'  way of teaching. He  always considered the mental capacity of the learner before teaching him. He  always spoke as much as needed and never spoke extra. He never corrected a person for his mistake by calling him by his name or talking about it in front of people, but he  always corrected people indirectly by giving hints and without naming them.

Once the Companions  saw him  fasting continuously, so they also started fasting continuously, due to which they became weak and their faces turned pale on which the Prophet  addressed at a place where a lot of people were gathered and said that what has happened to people that they adopt habits on seeing someone having them, even though one person may be different from another. (Sunan Abi Dawood: 4788)

That is, instead of addressing them by name, the Holy Prophet  spoke with gestures so as not to offend them. Whenever he  gave advice, he used to take care not to hurt anyone's feelings. At the time of counseling, he used to do it politely rather than sternly with a soft impression in his eyes.

If ever it was required to instantly warn about a mistake, then he  explained in a very gentle and loving manner so that the addressee would be willing to accept the truth. It is mentioned in a blessed Hadith that a villager started urinating in a corner of the Prophet's Mosque (Masjid-e-Nabawi), when he finished urinating, the Holy Prophet  asked for a bowl of water, which was poured over the urine. After embracing Islam, this Arab companion (narrating his incident) said: The Holy Prophet  came to me. Neither he snubbed me nor he insulted me. Rather he said to me: This Mosque is a sacred place and one should not urinate in it. It has been built for the remembrance of Allah and for prayer. (Sunan Ibn Majah: 529)

How loving and compassionate the Holy Prophet  was with people can be inferred from the saying of Hazrat Anas , who said, I served the Messenger of Allah  for ten years, and I do not know (of any instance) when he  said to me: Why you have done this and that, and he never found fault with me in anything. (Sahih Muslim: 2309)

In the process  of reform and training, he had a special style that he used to avoid long lectures or suggestions. It was an amazing attribute of the Holy that he used to sum up great things precisely without leaving any important thing behind. Allah Almighty has blessed him with the special attribute.

The Holy Prophet used to take care of the feelings and emotions of the addressee as well as their mood and psychology as well. Once a man came to the Prophet (s) and said: O Allah's Messenger! When will the Day of Resurrection be established? It seemed to be a trivial question, to which any answer could be given and the matter could be ended by telling some signs of the Day of Resurrection but the Holy Prophet  did not do that. When he saw that a person was worried about the Day of Resurrection and was asking question about it occurrence, he asked him a question instead of answering him: What preparation have you made for that day? (Sahih al-Bukhari: 6167). Through this question, the Holy Prophet (s) made us aware of a fact that the real issue is not that when will the Day of Resurrection come, but the real issue is that what have you prepared for the Day of Resurrection? Even if the Day of Resurrection will occur late but if there is no preparation from our side, it is useless. In this way the Holy Prophet  made the questioner ready for himself analysis and take care of his deeds.

The Holy Prophet used to do everything at the right time. He used to praise his Companions for good deeds and encourage them for their good work. Once a person came to meet the Holy Prophet he saw that there were marks on his palms. When the Prophet  inquired about the reason, he said: O Allah's Messenger I am a labourer, I have to break stones for halal sustenance, due to this hard work these marks are formed. When the Holy Prophet heard this, he kissed his hands with compassion. Such actions create feelings of love in the heart of the addressee, by which he is not only willing to accept the talk, but also continues to follow it in any situation.

Hazrat Muhammad used to arrange gradualism in every work and in every matter. He would remove a defect by thoroughly analyzing the merits and demerits of the trainees, develop a virtue, and used to adjust it according to the capacity and strength of the recipient. So when Hazrat Muaaz bin Jabal  was sent to Yemen, the Holy Prophet  said to him, Go to the Ahl al-Kitab (People of the Book) first invite them to Tawheed and Prophethood. And if they accept that Allah is One and Muhammad  is His messenger, then tell them that Allah has made five prayers in the day and night obligatory, when they accept that also then tell them that Allah has made Zakat obligatory on them which will be taken from their rich and distributed among their poor families. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 1395)

Even today, if we follow the way of life of the Holy Prophet , then if Allah wills, a righteous and happy society will come into existence and under its shadow, the entire humanity will have peace and tranquility. The Prophet's (s) method of education contains guiding principles for parents, teachers and scholars. They can follow these principles for the better brought up of people and can make them a successful member of the society.
